George William Gerkin (1896 – 1979)

George William Gerkin was born on Saturday, the 26th of September, 1896 in South Grafton, West Virginia.  He was the sixth child and fourth son of Joseph John Gerken and Ida Aeolia Seargeant.  He grew up in Taylor County and was an avid baseball player.  He came to be known by his nickname, “Speedy”.

In January of 1917, he married Grace Louise Mahaffey, the eighth child and fourth daughter of Gibson Lanty Mahaffey and Eliza Jane Nuzum.  George and Grace would have two daughters and a son.

The following year, he began employment in the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad shops in Grafton, where he trained and worked as a boilermaker and sheetmetal worker until his retirement in 1962.

George Gerkin enjoyed gardening and woodworking, building several fine grandfather clocks in his later years.
